CineStory 2024 Feature Fellowship aka so this is [spec feature] love...

My absurdist comedy, TRIVIAL PURSUITS, along with my sparkling personality, has helped me become a 2024 CineStory Fellowship Feature Finalist, placing in the top 3.

TRIVIAL PURSUITS started as a love letter to my nerdy Quiz Bowl peeps but grew into so much more. It’s simultaneously absurdist and grounded with a ragtag group of underdogs taking on the world, and learning what winning really looks like in the process. I wish I could send it to my High School self and let her know there’s so much more to life than grades. In the end, I guess I learned this.

LOGLINE: Based on a true-ish story, a type-A nerd partners with a dopey jock, a mysterious artist, and a cynical delinquent to save their public school Trivia Bowl team from dissolution at the hands of their private academy rivals.

COMPS: Nerdier PITCH PERFECT aka tonally BOOKSMART.

If anyone fancy is reading this and still very interested, here's a link to check it out.

Austin Film Fest Enderby Entertainment Semi-Finalist

Great news for TRIVIAL PURSUITS! (The title’s a lot of words. I’ll explain.)

As a semi-finalist, TRIVIAL PURSUITS made the Top 2% of scripts submitted to the Austin Film Festival (AFF). AFF has tens of thousands of submissions each year, so it’s a high honor. The Enderby Award is specifically for “feature scripts in all genres with an original concept and distinctive voice that can be produced for under $10 million.

Basically, I’ve got voice coming out of my butt, and this script can be made on the [relatively] cheap. Which, honestly, feels validating because this script is a bit bonkers.

HMU if you’re interested.

2024 Writer's Discovery Fellow (Circle Management + Production & Anarchists United)

[Honored. Anxious. Excited.]

I’m honored by this selection and by the incredible opportunity to work with Circle Management and Production & Anarchists United over the next 6 months.

I wrote a thoughtful reflection on my Instagram. The lengthy post likely undermines my aspirations as a pithy comedy writer. But also, I was chosen for my 1/2 hour dark comedy, REAPER, INC., which just keeps reaping recognition [ha. ha. ha.], so maybe there’s still some hope for me yet.

Eschewing the insecurities for a second, I want to sit in this moment. Being a screenwriter is a test of insanity. Wins are elusive. All you can do is love the grind. Enjoy the mind-numbing task of sitting alone in front of a blank page and putting words on it. [Ideally in a coherent order, but if not, that’s what D2-D100 are for.]

That’s it. That’s the job. Over and over again.

Today, I’ll celebrate the win.

But tomorrow, the real work begins.

xoxo, K.

CineStory's 2022 TV Fellowship competition.

Time for my big face again… :)

I’m so honored to be CineStory’s 2022 TV Fellowship Comedy winner! Honestly, I’m surprised that people responded to this weird, dark 1/2 hour comedy (Reaper, Inc.) about Grim Reapers that design human deaths. (What the fuck is wrong with you??)

In case you’re still reading, take a gander at the full story here.

"Now Streaming" a UCLA Screenwriters' Showcase Finalist!

I’m honored and floored that Now Streaming is a Finalist in UCLA’s 2021 Screenwriters’ Showcase.

It was a major labor of love — a little gay allegory musical that could — and I’m blown away by the response to the script. Write with your heart, y’all and it’ll happen.

The Alexandra Lederer Scholarship

I’m thrilled to have been awarded The Alexandra Lederer Scholarship. It’s given to a screenwriting MFA student who, in the opinion of the Screenwriting faculty, through his or her work, most closely matches that of the vision of the Screenwriting Program. After two years in UCLA’s MFA program, writing and rewriting and rewriting again to refine my craft and find my voice, this recognition means everything to me.

Nicholls Fellowship 2020 Quarter Finalist

Out of a record 7,831 entries into the 2020 Nicholls Fellowship for Screenwriting, Games in the Sky was chosen as one of the 365 Quarter Finalists.

I honestly have no words. I’ll let you know if I advance further in the Fellowship Competition, but for now, no words.

UCLA Screenwriters' Showcase Finalist !!!

UCLA hosts a yearly Screenwriting Showcase Competition for all students in their MFA program. Any Screenwriting student (1st or 2nd year) is able to apply. This year there were 80+ scripts scored and evaluated by 250+ industry professionals.

My script Games in the Sky was a finalist in the Feature — Drama category. I’m so blown away and honored to be recognized.

This was a crazy personal story for me and I put all of myself into it. I’m really glad others fell in love with two moms their amazingly special son.

Accepted into UCLA’s MFA Screenwriting Program!
UCLA TFT icon.png

After a two year process, including quitting my tech job in San Francisco, taking classes at the local community college, pouring numerous hours into a creative portfolio, and nailing one hyper-critical 20 minute interview, I’ve officially been accepted into UCLA’s TFT MFA Screenwriting Program, Class of 2021.

I’m not naive—this one of many steps towards becoming a professional screenwriter. But for now, I’ll celebrate the victory.

(My first ever screenplay, Out on a Limb, was used as part of this submission process.)
